In tribute to one of their members, the Nuffield Gym at Guiseley
organised
a Sponsored Swim throughout May 2009 in aid of the Bradford
Marie Curie Hospice.
Ken
Pollard (82) of Otley lost his 15 year battle with cancer at the
Bradford
Hospice
in February 2009.
Ken
who was well know at the Gym, formerly Cannons, which he joined
when it
opened
in 2001. Until the summer of 2008 he was still taking moderate exercise
on
the bike and weight training equipment followed by a daily 20 length
swim,
although
he was persuaded by his family to reduce to 10 lengths and was
still
swimming daily until October 2008.
His
daughter, Louise Lee said, “ He had a gregarious personality
and he made so
many friendships in the club and created a social coffee circle.
He was a great
example of the benefits of exercising regardless of his constraints.
I
spoke with
my father about organising a sponsored swim in his memory and he
was delighted.
He had wonderful care at the Hospice and it is a way of saying thank
you. We are
also very grateful to the staff and management for their support”.
Gym
Manager, Dan Hartigan said, “Ken was a great personality and
really let us know
if he thought something was quite right in the gym. We’ll
miss him and are delighted to
hosting this event in his memory”.
The
challenge set was to swim a mile over the month of May
and gain sponsorship
for the Bradford Marie Curie Hospice.
Anyone
not a member at the Gym could have a free three day pass to use
whenever they
wished during the month.
Community
Fundraising manager, Brenda Doyle, said “Mr Pollard was obviously
a much
loved and respected man, who I know did a great deal for charity
and we very much
appreciated this event in his name benefiting the Hospice”.
